The Division of Environmental Quality will be collecting water samples from groundwater wells on Saipan starting next week, Feb. 9. The sampling event will continue through the month of March 2009.

The purpose of the sampling is to evaluate the condition of groundwater around potential areas for public water supply sources.

“This sampling activity will provide new groundwater data that would assist DEQ to prioritize program actions to address any significant findings,” said Ray Masga, branch manager for the Site Assessment and Remediation at DEQ. “Environmental and waste samples will be collected to determine what hazardous substances are released at the site.”

The impacted locations include Koberville, As Lito, San Antonio, Susupe, Gualo Rai, Lower Base, and Kagman

Well owners and operators are advised to have a representative on standby to grant DEQ staff access to the well(s). For the safety of the DEQ sampling team, we advise that your well head be cleared of any object that may obstruct the access to your well. Also, loose dogs should be kept on a leash when DEQ comes to your facility.

“The sampling will be performed during regular government hours and it is helpful if well owners and operators provided access to the wells. Also, it would be useful if well owners and operators can advise DEQ if your well is currently active or not,” said Jose Kaipat, manager for the Safe Drinking Water branch.

There are over 300 wells on Saipan that produce over 9 million gallons of water per day; of which 103 private and public water supply wells will be sampled during this sampling event. DEQ may be contacting your office if your well is in the list of wells to be sampled.

The groundwater evaluation study will conclude in March. For additional information about the groundwater sampling, contact 664-8500 or send an e-mail to raymasga@deq.gov.mp. (DEQ)
