Small craft advisory in effect today
The Emergency Management Office said a small craft advisory for hazardous seas is in effect through early this morning as moderate to fresh trade winds and isolated showers are expected the next few days.
Based on the information from National Weather Service in Tiyan, Guam, combined seas of 10-11 feet yesterday should diminish to nine feet today. However, the high surf advisory will remain in effect until 6am today along north facing reefs.
Due to the rising seas and surf in our region, EMO is strongly advising the public—especially beachgoers, fishermen, tourists, swimmers, divers, and surfers—to avoid venturing near exposed reefs and beaches especially along north and west facing reefs. Rip currents can be life threatening to anyone entering the water.
EMO added that while there is high risk of rip currents through late last night, surf will be hazardous at 9-11 feet on north facing exposures today. The surf should fall below hazardous levels by early Friday.
It advised the public to stay away from exposed reefs and beaches, especially those facing north as rip currents will be life-threatening.
On Rota, north facing exposures include Teteto beach. On Saipan north facing exposures include Achugao beach.
Tonight, 15 KT northeast wind are expected to produce waves 4-6 feet north and swells 5 feet and 4 feet in the east. (EMO)
