Three tune-up tournaments have been scheduled in separate venues leading up to the 2009 Marianas Cup Beach Volleyball Festival.

Last night, the women’s two-person beach volleyball league kicked off at Hyatt Regency Saipan.

All games will start at 4:30pm with the participating teams to play in a double elimination format. For more details, contact Kim, Kelly, or Russ at 286-0318.

Then on Feb. 11, the men’s two-person beach volleyball league will begin at the Pacific Islands Club with a total of 16 teams expected to join.

Games will begin at the 5pm and the teams will play in a double-elimination format.

Interested teams can register at the PIC volleyball court on Tuesday, Feb. 10, with an entry fee of $10 for members of the Northern Mariana Islands Volleyball Association and $15 for non-members.

You may call Dan Wesphal or Russ Quinn at 287-0318 for more information.

Another exciting event coming up next week is the Fiesta on the Beach to be staged at the Fiesta Resort and Spa Saipan.

This will be a one-day event scheduled for Feb. 15 and is being held for the first time.

The two-person event will be for both men and women’s divisions.

One of the organizers, Tyce Mister, said they are anticipating 10 women’s and 16 men’s teams to join.

Other NMIVA members who are coordinating this event are Bruce Berline, Rob Epley, Russ Quinn, and Chris Fizer of Fiesta.

Seafix, one of the sponsors, have designed and built two new court poles to replace the old ones. Mister said the event’s main objective is to promote beach volleyball in general and to build excitement for the 17th Marianas Cup, which had been set for March 6-8.

The event is expected to become the biggest ever with a strong field of participants from Japan, Korea, Guam, Italy, and the U.S. mainland vying for the top honors.

Olympic gold medalist Phil Dalhauser has already assured that he would return to Saipan for the fourth time to join the annual event.
