Fitial visits GTC campus, promises CIP funding
Gov. Benigno R. Fitial visited the Gregorio T. Camacho Elementary School Friday afternoon and met with GTC principal Charlotte Camacho and members of the school staff and Parents Teachers Association.
During the school visit, Fitial inspected the dilapidated San Roque classrooms, met with students, and viewed a video presentation that student prepared on the need for classroom repairs. Fitial also met Rita Sablan, the PSS education commissioner, about a plan to reprogram CIP funds for the repair of the school facility.
After viewing the school facility, Fitial said he agrees that the highest possible priority must be placed on the repair of the dilapidated school facilities and pledged to work with the PSS Board of Education to use CIP funds for this purpose.
“I will do everything within my authority as governor to address this urgent school need for teachers, parents, and students,” said Fitial, who asked Commissioner Sablan to support his plan to reprogram some $500,000 of federal CIP funds previously allocated for the Public School System for GTC School repairs.
According to the governor, the money should come from a $1.2 million CIP allocation for PSS.
“These funds have yet to be drawn down and are still available,” said Fitial. “I ask PSS to support the temporary reprogramming of these funds for GTC, with the understanding that the funds will be replenished soon thereafter.”
Fitial welcomes PSS support to use federal CIP funds for GTC and pledges to secure more federal funds for PSS to meet the infrastructure needs of the various schools throughout the system. (PR)
