The Lina’la’ Melawa’sch Academy is an alternative school located at Hopwood Junior High. The candidates to this program are students who have exhausted the entire intervention program provided by Hopwood’s main campus. Students who are ordered by the court to be in school are also referred to this program. This academy is also running a home school program.

Both LMA and home school are under the supervision of Felisa Brel, who has been with Hopwood Jr. High for 18 years. The school counselors—Ms. Mendoza, Ms. Blau, and Ms. Mobel—do not only provide counseling services but also conduct presentations on promoting one’s self esteem, learning to make right choices, learning to cope with peer pressure, and more.

When school started this year, the program had 11 students but this soon went up to 20. Toward the end of the second quarter the number dropped because four were placed under home school.

On Jan. 30, six LMA students celebrated their mini-promotion exercise held at the LMA campus with parents, school administrators, and LMA teacher Brel. These six students’ hard work and commitment to their education enabled them to move up to high school.

“For you, my six special people, ‘Aim high, heaven is the limit,’” said Brel. (PR)
