Members of the Commonwealth Election Commission are scheduled to meet on Thursday this week to talk about the hiring of a new executive director.

The new executive director would fill the vacant position left by Gregorio “Kilili” Sablan following his resignation last year to run for CNMI Delegate to the U.S. Congress.

Sablan, who won the seat, will arrive within the week from Washington, D.C., according to Rotary Club president Ben Babauta, but it is not related to Thursday’s meeting.

Acting executive director Julita A. Villagomez said yesterday that the commissioners would be discussing the issue.

“Whether the commissioners have already somebody in mind or if there are already applicants for the position will be known in that meeting,” Villagomez said.

The CEC has five commissioners from Saipan, including Frances M. Sablan, chairwoman; Elizabeth Dlg. Aldan, Melvin B. Sablan, Jose L. Itibus, and Jesus I. Sablan; and two each from Rota and Tinian.

However, there is one vacant slot each for Rota and Tinian.

The other commissioners are Miranda V. Manglona for Rota and Jose P. Kiyoshi for Tinian.

Meanwhile, interested candidates for the 2009 General Election on Nov. 7 can now secure a pamphlet at the Election Commission for guidelines and other important information.

Several candidates have already unofficially announced their bid for governor, lieutenant governor, a seat in the Legislature and for mayor but the first day for submission of nominating petitions and candidacy documents is set on July 10.

The last day of submission is on Aug. 10.

The last day for voter registration is on Sept. 18.
