Let the judicial process run its course
As I read your recent article regarding the possibility of impeachment proceedings being taken against Lt. Gov. Timothy P. Villagomez, I was shocked by the absolute disregard of the rights of the Lt. Governor, especially by the comments of Rep. Tina Sablan.
Ms. Sablan’s audacity is only surpassed by her ignorance. The Lt. Governor has constitutional rights just like every citizen. He is vigorously defending himself against the allegations brought against him in a court of law, with all its safeguards for Mr. Villagomez, as well as the government. Ms. Sablan, on the hand, seems to want to convene a good old “Jim Crow” lynch mob and march through the streets, looking to hang the Lt. Governor from the highest tree.
Unless someone changed the Constitution, Lt. Gov. Villagomez is presumed innocent of the pending allegations. Until a jury of his peers decides otherwise, he is innocent.
The prospect of Rep. Tina Sablan conducting impeachment proceeding while at the same time the Lt. Governor is defending himself in court is ridiculous and violates every fiber of our system of justice. The comparison to Governor Blagojevich is misplaced. The Illinois governor was impeached for misconduct unrelated to his possible criminal charges for attempting to “sell” the former Senate seat of President Obama. Another key distinction—Governor Blagojevich has not yet been charged in a court of law prior to the impeachment proceedings being held.
Ms. Sablan is a living, breathing example of the old saying that a “little knowledge in the hands of a fool is a dangerous thing.” Let the judicial process run its course and do not presume an innocent man guilty.
