Tour founders promise bigger event next year
Tour De Marianas founders Jazy and Mylene Garcia are promising a bigger event next year following the success of the Saipan stages of the 8th Annual Jazy Cup.
The husband-and-wife tandem expressed their appreciation to all who supported the two-day event, where 58 riders participated.
A professional cyclist from Japan, Ogasawara Takahiro, dominated the race by winning both the individual time trials on Feb. 21 and the road race on Feb. 22.
“It was a great for the race with sunny but windy weather up and down the hills,” the Garcias said as they extended their appreciation to sponsors led by TakeCare, Mair, Mair, Spade & Thompson, Tan Holdings, MR Imaging Group, Toro Bravo Bike Club, and Jazysportswear.
Saipan sponsors and donors were Fiesta Resort Saipan, DFS Galleria, IT&E, Pacific Islands Club, LBT Appraisal, Hard Rock Café, Fomacon Liner, Saipan Grand Hotel, Saipan Shipping, Bank Pacific, Pacific Traders Insurance, Coco Restaurant, and Saipan Bike Pro.
“Thank you to the Saipan police department for providing all the support at the traffic lights and intersections, and also for providing the escort and driving the course throughout the race. Their support makes these events safe for everyone,” wrote Mylene in an email from Guam.
The Guam stages of the Tour will be held March 14 and 15, after which the overall champion would be determined by their times in all four stages.
The race is for the benefit of the Jazy Garcia Foundation.
Helping out with the technical side of the Saipan races were Johann Sobredo and Liza Gozon, who assisted with registration, setup, and breakdown.
“We truly appreciate their time and dedication. We most especially want to thank our volunteers for getting up so early to help organize and put it all together—Ronald Villafria, Alex Gozon, and Brad Ruszalla,” the Garcias said.
Also mentioned were the efforts of Fred Camacho and Joshua Berger.
The junior riders, the Garcias also noted, showed their strong performance with Federico Fernandez making waves in the expert division, Andres Halaby surprising everyone in the mountain bike, and Andy Nutting doing well in the novice division.
