Street and road signs
The Legislature has decided to reprogram the remaining balance from the Saipan Mayor’s Office, which oversees the street naming throughout the island of Saipan. Now we’re back to the beginning, so that when we give direction to any particular place on the island, it goes like this: “Yes, pass Family Market and on the third road to your left going south, you will see a big boat parked by the road, make a left turn and count until the fifth house on the right and that’s where the families are at.” Funny, isn’t it? I thought so.
But when you see an ambulance passing in front of your house with their emergency red light flashing, both driver and passenger looking in all directions wondering where the heck is the house they need to get to, to provide medical assistance, I tell myself, “I just hope that the person who needs the help is going to be okay.”
All this is due to street signs being run down by drunk drivers (their car insurance company should pay), vandalism, uneducated fools with nothing to do but destroy public property. May I suggest a solution please: Restore funding to the Saipan Mayor’s Office so they can replace/repair missing or damaged signs; the Legislature should enact stiffer fines against those who violate and have no respect for the CNMI law; and a strong enforcement by our CNMI community and the Department of Public Safety. Please let’s all live responsibly.
