The playoff round in the 2009 Navy Hill Friendship Basketball League will have only eight teams instead of nine, after Uncle Ben pulled out of the 12-team league.

Advancing to the next round are Dollar Days, Docomo, KFC/Taco Bell, Rollers, Inchape, MBI, Athlete’s Foot, and IT&E. The San Antonio Shooters (2-9), 670 Rollers (1-10), and Mobil (1-10) were eliminated.

The playoff round was supposed to start last Sunday, but games were cancelled due to rain. The first two matches in the playoffs will be played tomorrow with the third seed KFC/Taco Bell taking on the No. 6 team MBI in the first game at 7pm.

KFC Taco Ball finished the regular season with an 8-3 record, tying the Rollers, but the former won the tiebreak due to the win-over-the-other rule.

In the second game at 8:30pm, Docomo will collide with Athlete’s Foot. Docomo placed second in the regular season with its 9-2 slate, while Athlete’s Foot was seventh with a 6-5 record, losing to MBI in the tiebreak.

Other pairings are Dollar Days vs. IT&E and Rollers vs. Inchcape.

Dollar Days is the inaugural league’s pennant champion after recording an impressive 10-1 mark. It could have received a bye in the first round of the playoffs had Uncle Ben not withdrawn from the league.

Uncle Ben finished eighth in the round-robin regular season with a 6-5 slate and was initially paired against KFC/Taco Bell. IT&E is seeded last after collecting only four wins in 11 games and was originally pitted against Docomo.

The Rollers are seeded fourth and will be dueling the No. 5 team Inchcape this Saturday after the Dollar Days-IT&E tiff.

The playoff round will have a single-elimination format, while the title showdown will be a best-of-three affair.

Games in the Navy Hill caging are played at the Garapan Basketball Court.
