Teams of students from around the Commonwealth will participate in the annual Junior High Mock Trial on Saturday, April 18, 2009, from 9am to noon, at the U.S. District Court chamber in Garapan.

This program is hosted annually by the NMI Council for the Humanities to help students develop useful knowledge about the law and courtroom procedures in enjoyable, non-competitive format.

Participating teams representing the prosecution and defense will argue a hypothetical case before Rep. Joseph Camacho, who will serve as the mock trial judge. Attorney Teresa Kim will serve as the bailiff.

Teams have been practicing their respective sides the past few months with the assistance of their teacher coaches and periodic advice received from volunteer attorneys who have served as lawyer coaches.

Final parings for this year’s mock trial include: Mount Carmel vs. Grace Christian Academy #1; Tinian Junior High vs. Eskuelan San Fransisco de Borja; Whispering Palms vs. Grace Christian Academy #1; and Grace Christian Academy #2 vs. Rota Junior High School.

Unlike the high school mock trial program, no winners will be selected. Rather, the Humanities Council will award special certificates to individual students recognized by Camacho for exemplary performances in their roles as attorneys and witnesses.

The Humanities Council invites the public to attend this educational and entertaining event. For more information contact Council staff at 235-4785. (PR)
