Two Japanese mags share XTERRA experience
Triathlons, travel, and the tropics came together last weekend for two Japanese magazines covering the 2009 XTERRA Saipan Championship in the Northern Mariana Island. Tarzan magazine and Triathlon Trip magazine both sent crews in mid-April to cover the annual sporting event for their readers.
Four Tarzan readers got even closer to the action, as they had been selected by the magazine to train and compete in the event along with Taro Shirato, the official athlete of XTERRA Japan. Tarzan magazine targets male and female office workers in their 30s who are interested in health and style. Published bi-weekly by Magazine House, Tarzan reached over 100,000 readers. Tarzan will feature five-pages of XTERRA coverage in the May 2009 issue at an estimated ad value of US$84,269.
Triathlon Trip is a new quarterly magazine targeting men and women in their 20s to 50s. Published by Gentle Breeze beginning April 2009, the magazine reaches 30,000 readers with useful information about triathlons and the destinations where they are held. XTERRA Saipan will be featured on four pages of their September issue, with an approximate ad value of US$26,000.
“XTERRA and our other annual sporting events are among our most cost effective ways of promoting Saipan, Tinian, and Rota,” said Marianas Visitors Authority Managing Director Perry Tenorio. “Through coverage of these events, we can share information and images with a broad audience at a low cost.”
In addition to covering the XTERRA event, both media outlets also did photo shoots at the Saipan Beach Pathway and Garapan Street Market. The Tarzan crew visited Managaha, while photogs from Triathlon Trip shot on location at Joeten Susupe Shopping Center and with Marianas Trekking. (MVA)
