Open government

There are three important factors that lead to a strong government. President Barack Obama states that a government “should be transparent, participatory, and collaborative.” (whitehouse.gov). A transparent government should be clear and liable so that citizens can gain information from our government. Active participation allows a stronger government by improving the quality of decisions being made. Effectively working together in our government provides accountability. The Open Government or “Sunshine laws” are laws that allow the public to obtain information from a specific government agency. In a recent test, it was reported that nearly half of CNMI government agencies failed to comply with the Open Government Act. The government agencies that failed are violating the law. Probably what caused nearly half of our government agencies to fail is the lack of active citizen participation and collaboration. In the CNMI, this is one of our greatest concerns. We need to work effectively with one another to reduce complications within our government. It is a lesson worth learning, that an open government can make the CNMI government better. The consequences of not ensuring an open government would lead to more discrepancies. It is also best that everyone should be aware of our government’s decisions, actions, and issues that occur.
