The U.S. Forest Service is looking for highly motivated people to train and become wildland firefighters.

The physical test, called the “Work Capacity Test,” is slated for June 6 to June 9. Prospective candidates should be able to hike (no running or jogging) three miles with a 45 lb backpack in 45 minutes.

DPS Fire will administer the test, also called the “Pack Test,” while U.S. Forest Service Region 5 representatives will certify the test.

Candidates who pass the arduous test and have the proper documents will be eligible for deployment to stateside wildland fire incidents, should the need arise.

The U.S. Forest Service has been providing on-site trainings to potential wildland firefighters. These trainings prepare local firefighters to work in organized hand crews during wildland fire seasons (generally from June-November) upon deployment request from the U.S. Forest Service, Region 5 Office.
