Sweeps rule Week 1 of IT&E badminton tourney

Sixteen of the 27 games in Week 1 of the 2011 IT&E Singles/Doubles Badminton Tournament played over the weekend at the NMBA Gym at the TSL Sports Complex resulted in sweeps.

Recording sweeps on Saturday were Chris Hilario and Kim Boranah and the pairs of Hannai Choi and So Young Lee, Angie Ito and Gigi Zapanta, and Lani Bartolome and Marlene Peraja.

Hilario played in the men’s B2 singles and beat Jorge Olanda in straight sets, 21-13, 21-12, while Boranah prevailed over Rose Lazaro in the women’s C singles, 21-15, 21-9.

In the women’s A doubles games, Choi and Lee downed Loyda Ito and Cristy Villaflor, 21-18, 21-13; Angie Ito and Zapanta topped Malou Malasarte and Chris Obaldo, 21-19, 21-12; and Bartolome and Peraja defeated Anna Alvarez and Shirley Kim, 21-16, 21-18.

Other opening day winners were Anna Omori and Michelle Caleon, Vic Reyes, Mario Diola, and Saul Gargallo.

Gargallo needed three sets to thwart Joseph Santos in the men’s B1 singles, 21-16, 16-21, 21-10. Diola also survived a three-set men’s B singles match against Edwin Montoya, 21-20, 20-21, 21-3.

In the fourth women’s A doubles game last Saturday, Omori and Caleon triumphed over Marylyn Montano and Cheng Saturno, 21-15, 13-21, 21-20.

Last Saturday at Court 1, Aries Cordero and Hilario and Joseph Santos and Sam Jones prevailed in their respective men’s A doubles matches. Cordero and Hilario won over Edwin Maratas and Olanda, 21-18, 21-16, while Santos and Jones edged Dick Guintu and Narlou Achas, 21-17, 21-16.

In other matches at Court 1, Andrew Galvez thwarted Mariola Diola in the men’s A singles, 21-11, 21-12; Mahesh Balakrishna slipped past Joel Ortega in the men’s C singles, 18-21, 21-14, 21-14; and Malou Malasarte won over Loyda Ito in the women’s A singles, 21-19, 21-13.

Over at Court 2, Rick Brien beat Panapa in the men’s C singles, 21-16, 21-13; Luis Camacho downed Dick Boranah in the men’s C singles, 21-19, 21-10; Montano whipped Villaflor in the women’s A singles, 21-18, 15-21, 21-13; Caleon topped Merlie Tolentino in the women’s B singles, 21-21, 21-10; and Brendon Talania and Jerome Malasarte crushed Zandro Neri and Bryan Balboa, 21-9, 21-9.

At Court C, Father Charlie Borja and Carlo Conwi and Zapanta and Lazaro swept their respective foes, while Irish Pagarao and the pair of Elma Labuson and Jaja Samonte recorded victories in three sets. Borja and Conwi tallied twin wins in the men’s C doubles after defeating Park Sang Do, 21-16, 21-19, and Luis Camacho and Pana, 21-11, 21-14.

Games in the IT&E badminton tournament will continue tonight.
