Over 400 attend NMC’s Cash for College workshop
Over 400 people attended the Cash for College workshop at the Northern Marianas College held on campus Saturday.
The workshop, aimed at assisting students and their parents maximize scholarship opportunities that are available to students seeking to obtain a college education, had 440 participants from the three main public high schools on island: Marianas High School, Kagman High School, and Saipan Southern High School.
In a statement yesterday, NMC said that some of the event’s participants also included parents of students and current students of the college.
Saipan Tribune learned that participants received step-by-step assistance in completing college financial aid forms for the Free Application for Federal Student Aid or FAFSA, the Saipan Higher Education Financial Aid or SHEFA, and the CNMI Scholarship. Staff members from the Office of Admissions and Records were also present to provide information and assistance with the NMC application process.
The Cash for College workshop was made possible with the financial support of the U.S. Department of Education’s College Access Challenge Grant Program. The College Access Challenge Project aims to increase the number of students from underrepresented minority populations enrolled in college.
Last Saturday’s workshop was the fourth event hosted by NMC in the past two years. It has already started efforts to offer similar events on Rota and Tinian.
“We are extremely pleased with the turn out of students for the Cash for College event. We are glad to see that so many students are taking advantage of the financial aid packages that are offered from different sources,” said Student Services dean Leo Pangelinan.
He advised those students who missed the Cash for College event to visit NMC’s Financial Aid Office to get assistance in filling up forms.
“The college is working to have more events like these that help students maximize the resources that’s available to them,” said interim president Lorraine T. Cabrera, who also recognized and commended the hardworking students, staff, and faculty who gave up their Saturday to volunteer for the Cash for College event.
