Course changes for Butch fundraiser
Changes are made for the bike courses in Butch Journey to XTERRA World Championship Fundraiser II this Sunday.
In the MTB course for beginners, riders will begin at Paupau Beach and head to the dumping site road, Cowtown, and Banzai Cliff before returning to the starting line for the finish.
The MTB sports course will also start at Paupau, but bikers will proceed to Suicide Cliff, Kimikaze trail, turn left to Grotto, Santa Clause trail, dumping site, and past the Last Command Post before going back to Paupau.
For the MTB open course, bikers will also go to the Suicide Cliff and Kimikaze trail after leaving Paupau, but instead of turning left to Grotto, they will head to Bird Islands, Calabera and Radar roads up to the one million gallon tank, turn left to Marianas Country Club road, and turn left to the main road going back to the starting line.
The road bike race will have only one category with bikers leaving Paupau and heading to Suicide Cliff, Bird Island, Grotto, and Banzai Cliff and returning to the starting line.
The bike race fundraiser aims to help send veteran triathlete Butch Sublemente to Hawaii in October for the 2011 XTERRA World Championship. He earned a slot to XTERRA World after ruling his age group (35 to 39) and becoming the top male finisher from Saipan.
Sublemente had the same fundraiser in June with Nap Dizon and Susan Marchitti winning the road bike category, Bob Ferrer and Juanita Fajardo topping the MTB long course, and Harold Balana and Esther Ada prevailing in the MTB sports course.
In his second fundraiser this Sunday, Sublemente has added a run race. There will be two categories—the 5K and 8K. The shorter course will start at Paupau and runners will head to the baseball field and back to Paupau. For the 8K run, runners must go to as far as the Last Command Post and return to Paupau.
Entrance fee is only $10. Registration will start at 6am and all races will begin at 7:15am.
In-kind prizes will be given away at the end of the race, while a brand new mountain bike will be raffled off. Raffle tickets are available at Bike Pro. You don’t need to be present to win the bike.
