House commends Humanities Council
The House of Representatives adopted on Wednesday Resolution No. 17-58 commending and congratulating the Northern Mariana Islands Humanities Council for 20 years of service to the Commonwealth.
Introduced by Rep. Joseph P. Deleon Guerrero, the resolution lauded the council for promoting the study, understanding and appreciation of the local history, languages and cultures of the CNMI as well as celebrating the Commonwealth’s multi-cultural society by supporting projects that document the contributions of diverse groups within the community.
Overseen by a board of directors comprised of dedicated community members, the Council also examines the human experience by engaging the disciplines of history, philosophy, languages, linguistics, literature, archaeology, jurisprudence, ethics, cultural anthropology, and political theory.
The council has also established a variety of innovative public programs and initiatives such as the Motheread Family Literacy program, the Teachers History Institute, the Digital History Initiative, and the Junior High Mock Trial program.
It also awards cash grants to community groups and organizations to support grassroots humanities projects, the resolution added.
