Rematch in Rotary caging opener
Last year’s finalists Ol’Aces and Sonics are up for an early rematch as they square off in the opening game in the 19th Annual Rotary Club of Saipan Youth Basketball League today at the TSL Sports Complex.
Game time for the U19 division is set for 4:45pm. Joining the defending champions Ol’Aces and runners-up Sonics in the youth caging are Proa, Rollers, the Chalan Kanoa Blazers, the San Antonio Sixers Susupe Hi-5, and teams from Tanapag, Kagman, and Tinian.
“We are going to start the U19 season [today] and will hopefully hold a second game after the opener, but the second match pairing has yet to be determined,” league commissioner Abner Venus said.
Organizers added games schedule in the U19 division will also be released later.
This year’s Rotary league will also have separate competitions for U15 and U12 divisions, but starting dates are still pending, as organizers are planning to have a meeting next week to iron out final arrangements.
At present, six teams are confirmed to play in the U15 division. The list includes Sixers, four Rollers Basketball Club squads, and two girls teams. This will be the first time the Rotary youth caging has allowed girls teams to play against boys. The U12 division currently has four Rollers teams and slots are still available in both categories.
In last year’s U15 division, the Sonics prevailed over the Rollers in the winner-take-all finals, 70-53. The battle for the U19 championship was a neck-and-neck one with the Ol’Aces escaping with a 65-64 triumph to deny a Sonics sweep.
