Weather permitting, the long-awaited opening of the Saipan Major League’s 2011 Summer/Fall Youth Baseball League is set to kick off tomorrow at the Francisco “Tan Ko” Palacios Ballfield.

The league was originally scheduled to start last Saturday with a triple-header, but all games were rained-out. Five teams make up the league: Fielders 1 and 2, Kagman Lions, Ol’Aces, and Titanium.

Tomorrow’s opener will have Fielders 1 squaring off against Titanium at 12pm. In the second match at 2pm, the Kagman Lions will take on Fielders 2. The Ol’Aces see action against either the Fielders 1 or Titanium in the third game at 4pm.

The youth league feature players in the 14 to 18 age group. Games will be played under seven innings and since it’s a developmental program, wooden bats will be used in place of aluminum.

Weather permitting, each team will be guaranteed to play 20 games or more, exclusive of the playoffs. However, to prevent injuries, this format will require a four-inning limit per pitcher, per game. The league aims to improve the skills of youth players.

In related news, youth Tee-Ball baseball games tomorrow have been moved to the meadow at Micro Beach, as the Capital Hill Ballfield will be used for matches in the SUFA Softball Fundraiser this weekend.

Four games in the Tee-Ball are scheduled, starting hourly from 9am.

Tee-Ball action will return at the Capital Hill Ballfield next week and the season concludes on August 27 with the Family Fun Day.

Eight teams make up the Tee-Ball league with players ranging from 5 to 8 years old. Games will be played in three innings and every player gets three at-bats. Like the youth summer baseball league, Tee-Ball games were rained out last week as well.
