Third timely payroll for non-critical government employees

For at least the third time this year, non-critical government employees got their paychecks on time on Thursday and Friday along with those holding so-called critical government positions.

Press secretary Angel Demapan said yesterday that besides collecting enough money to cover for the biweekly payroll, the timely payroll for all employees was also because of the central government’s up-to-date payments to the Commonwealth Utilities Corp.

The central government used to make weekly payments of $250,000 to CUC to pay its arrears. The central government utility payment does not include those of the Public School System and Northern Marianas College.

Since June 2010, the government has been delayed in its payroll for non-critical employees because of limited cash in government bank accounts and other obligations that need to be met first, including hospital and utilities needs.

Non-critical service employees usually receive their paychecks on the Wednesday right after their supposed Friday payday.

Most of the employees subjected to delayed payrolls are also dealing with a 16-hour work cut biweekly and unpaid holidays as part of the Fitial administration’s cost cutting measures.

Only critical government employees such as doctors, nurses, firefighters and corrections officers, as well as federal-funded employees are being paid on time.
