Arguably the oldest Chinese restaurant on Saipan, Canton Restaurant has witnessed—and survived—the island’s previous economic prosperity, challenges from rival restaurants, and a prolonged recession.

The family-owned restaurant business in Garapan is celebrating today its longevity in the food industry as it rings in 27 years of serving authentic Chinese cuisine.

“Through the years, Canton Restaurant has strived and will continue to strive to uphold its “Three G” principle: good food, good service, and good atmosphere,” said Carol Wong Chan, who oversees the restaurant operations.

She also gives credit to the help of her husband and Canton Restaurant’s chef Tony Yuk Wong as well as her sisters Rose and Anna Chan for the restaurant’s success.

Chan said that Canton Restaurant makes an effort to treat all its patrons like they’re family.

“We make our customers feel comfortable and treat them as family,” she told Saipan Tribune. “So we whenever they go to Canton Restaurant, we make sure they feel at home, like it’s their family kitchen.”

Chan said it is this familiarity among customers that continues to make them return again and again to Canton Restaurant for almost three decades now.

“Most of our customers now actually belong to the third generation of their families. They would tell us that their grandparents and parents have always liked it here at Canton Restaurant and now it’s their turn to be here,” said Chan.

Canton Restaurant, which primarily offered Cantonese fare, also offers other Chinese dishes like Sichuan, Hong Kong, and Fujian cuisines. “We prepare our customers’ food orders to their liking,” said Chan.

What’s more, Chan said that most of their employees have already been with Canton Restaurant since they opened, which is why they are already acquainted with their diners’ distinctive palates.

Special anniversary promotions

While the CNMI’s economic situation continues to decline, Chan said that Canton Restaurant has maintained its affordability by not changing their menu prices for the last 10 years.

“We understand how hard life is for everyone, that is why we want our customers to know that Canton Restaurant is still within their means even through tough times,” she said.

Canton Restaurant has come up with exciting anniversary promotions as a way of thanking their loyal clientele.

Canton Restaurant offers a delectable special lunch buffet from Monday to Saturday, from 11am to 2pm, for only $8 per person. This includes soup, fresh salad, different entrees, unlimited ice cream, and refillable soft drinks. Children 3 to 7 yrs old have 50 percent discount and those below 3 years old can eat for free.

Starting this month, Canton Restaurant also offers take out lunch menu straight from the buffet. Customers can avail of one choice for only $3.50, two choices for $4.50, and three choices for $5.50.

If you missed the lunch menu, try any of their special dinner sets for just $6 per order. Choose among Canton Restaurant’s Sweet and Sour Pork, Shrimp & Pork Chop, Beef Broccoli, Pancit Canton, and Canton Fried Rice. Every set comes with rice, soup, and soda.

For the month of August, Chan said dine-in and to-go customers will receive a VIP card that will entitle them to a 10-percent discount on food orders for one year. Those who present their VIP card can avail of the daily lunch buffet for only $7.50.

Canton Restaurant, Chan said, is also the perfect place for all kinds of special events as the restaurant can hold up to 200 persons.
