To those not aware and totally unfamiliar with what took place before the making and signing of our unique Covenant with the United States, there is a huge difference between demanding and using false humanitarian issues as a reason for one’s agenda. In 1986, we the people of the Commonwealth woke up as American citizens. Yes, I woke up an American and proud of it. How it happened is really simple: 78.8 percent of our people including my parents, grandparents, uncles, and aunties voted “yes” to becoming a member of the American family, a destiny that would forever change our future. Our people did not demand, protest, hold vigils, and so forth. Instead we were afforded the opportunity to choose. A “yes” or “no” answer was all it took. Through negotiations after negotiations between our government and the United States, we became what we are today, American citizens. Look it up, it’s in the books.
