The U.S. Immigration Court yesterday held hearings on 13 removal cases on Saipan.

The U.S. Immigration Court yesterday held hearings on 13 removal cases on Saipan.

Judge Clarence M. Wagner of Honolulu conducted the proceedings through a videoconference. All 13 respondents on Saipan appeared at the hearings.

The respondents are five Chinese nationals, seven Filipinos, and one Indian national.

Saipan Tribune learned that most of the cases were continued, while a couple of respondents were found removable.

Wagner is expected to hold more hearings today, Friday, on two cases involving Chinese nationals.

Saipan Tribune counted hundreds of removal cases that have been filed with the Saipan Immigration Court since the federalization law took effect on Nov. 28, 2009. Many of the respondents have criminal convictions.

The immigration court had already declared many of these respondents removable but they were allowed to voluntarily depart the CNMI.
