Black Panther, 3 others survive playoff opener
Black Panther, We Are Groot, Ol’Aces, and The As’Guardians made it through the first round of the double-elimination playoffs of the Avengers Volleyball League.
Incidentally, the four winning squads are the Top 4 seeds in the playoff round and their triumph last Wednesday at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium moved them two wins away from marching into the finals.
The No. 1 seed Black Panther defeated The Re’Vengers in just two sets, 25-16, 25-10, to set up a Round 2 duel in the winner’s bracket with No. 4 seed We Are Groot. We Are Groot took three sets to prevail against No. 5 Iron Spike, 23-25, 25-22, 15-10.
In other results, No. 2 seed The As’Guardians downed No. 7 D’Challengers, 25-23, 25-11, to arrange a second round showdown against No. 2 Ol’Aces—a 25-21, 25-15 winner over No. 6 Straight Outta Knowhere.
The Ol’Aces-The As’Guardians tiff and the Black Panther-We Are Groot match were played last Friday with the victors advancing to the winner’s bracket semifinals.
In the loser’s bracket, The Re’Vengers was scheduled to meet Iron Spike last Friday, while Straight Outta Knowhere was slated to face D’Challengers. Teams in the loser’s bracket were in a must-win situation to avoid early elimination.
