Bob Marley tribute band Katchafire will perform in a one-night concert this Saturday, Jan. 14, at the Fiesta Resort & Spa beachside.

Promoter Derron Flores said he’s been trying since last year to bring the Hamilton, New Zealand-based group to perform on Saipan.

He said Katchafire has been featured in Trench Fest in Guam the past couple of years so it makes sense to fly them to the CNMI during the same weekend.

Flores said Katchafire’s tunes are pretty much like island songs people of the Pacific have come to love.

“They’re island people like us and their type of island reggae is like the ones people in the Marianas and the Pacific have always come to enjoy and love,” he said.

According to its website, katchafire.co.nz, the all-Maori reggae band has become a global roots reggae phenomenon by delivering its authentic reggae shows around the world.

Katchafire has released four highly successful studio albums, won multiple awards, and has churned out platinum sales and highest selling singles the past couple of years.

According to the website, the group’s sound is built on the foundations of classic roots reggae with an R’n’B and funk rub, mashing modern dancehall and slinky reggae pop.

Katchafire was founded by lead guitarist Grenville Bell, who is the father of lead singer Logan and drummer/singer/songwriter Jordan. The rest of the reggae group is made up of Leon Davey (percussion), Jamey Ferguson (saxophone), Tere Ngarua (bass), Thompson Hohepa (guitar), and Haani Totorewa (keyboard).

Tickets are on sale at Boarderline and Tribe Marianas at $25. The Katchafire concert is brought to you by Empire Entertainment, Calabis Clothing Company, and Flores’ Dotmp Promotions. Gates open at 5pm and the show starts at 6pm.
