Bordallo announces change to Navy Solar Project Proposal

WASHINGTON, D.C.—Congresswoman Madeleine Z. Bordallo announced that she was informed by the U.S. Navy that they intend to revise their proposal for the leasing of Navy land to develop a solar project on Guam to meet the “Green Guam” commitment. In particular, due to the hold that she placed on the project as Ranking Member of the Readiness Subcommittee, the Navy has revised its plans and will no longer use the Tumon Tank Farm property for the proposed solar project. It will retain ownership of that property while discussions about specific Navy land use plans continue. Congresswoman Bordallo placed a hold on the project in February due to concerns raised by local property owners and Governor Calvo.

“I appreciate the Navy’s revised plans to meet their commitment to a ‘Green Guam’ approach,” said Congresswoman Bordallo. “As Ranking Member of the Readiness Subcommittee I placed a hold on the proposed project due to local concerns over the project. I think the Navy used the extra time to better assess its needs and I concur that they can meet their obligations without this property. I will continue to work with local leaders and the Navy to identify lands to meet the ‘Net Negative’ commitment – a critical component of the four pillars committed to by the Department of Defense. In my position, I will continue to fight for what is in the best interest of the people of Guam and hold the Department of Defense accountable to their commitments.” (PR)
