The CNMI Homeland Security and Emergency Management issued a high surf advisory yesterday, warning the public of hazardous surf in the next few days. The high surf advisory remains in effect until 6pm Saturday.

“A deep low pressure system is moving eastward across the north Pacific with large long-period waves being produced from the Marianas to the dateline. The surf will then gradually subsides but remain hazardous until Saturday,” the advisory states.

Hazardous surf of 9 to 12 feet is expected to persist along north facing reefs of the Marianas until at least Thursday. Surf should gradually subside to below hazardous levels during the weekend.

The agency warns the public and inexperienced mariners to avoid venturing near exposed reefs and beaches, especially those along north facing reefs as rip currents are life threatening.
