The Japan Saipan Travel Association and its tourism partners gave the gift of community service to clean up the main tourist district of Garapan on Saturday, Dec. 21.

The semi-annual cleanup came as part of preparations for visitors expected during Japan’s upcoming Christmas and New Year holiday and was also held in conjunction with the annual Islandwide Cleanup spearheaded by the Division of Environmental Quality.

Beginning at 6:30am, 85 volunteers, including 40 children, collected an estimated 380 lbs of trash along the tourist district roadways and beaches from the Carolinian Affairs Office to Micro Beach. Groups joining JSTA included the Japan Society of the Northern Mariana Islands, Northern Marianas Diving Operators Association, Hotel Association of the Northern Mariana Islands, Consulate Office of Japan and the Marianas Visitors Authority. The MVA also provided water, and Division of Parks and Recreation arranged for trash pickup. JSTA provided gifts to the participating children, including those from Saipan Swim Club, Himawari Kenbu-kan Kendo team, and Japan Society of the Northern Mariana Islands educational department.
