CNMI community pitches in to help Haiyan victims in PH

People of the CNMI opened their hearts and their wallets for victims of Typhoon Haiyan, which ravaged the central Philippines on Nov. 8, leaving more than 6,000 people dead and another 4 million displaced.
The biggest donation from the Commonwealth came from Tan Holdings and CTSI Logistics, which donated a total of $53,074—representing employee donations that were matched by the company.
Saipan World Resort also gave away a big chunk of money for relief efforts as the Susupe landmark cut a check for $12,250, which represented money raised by the hotel’s own employees ($2,250) and a donation made by World Resort’s corporate office in South Korea ($10,000).
The United Filipino Organization raised a total of $11,184.64 and the money was turned over to ABS-CBN’s Sagip Kapamilya Program. UFO also facilitated the shipment of 401 balikbayan boxes of donated canned goods, clothing, shoes, housewares, among others, that will be coursed through the Philippine Red Cross.
First Hawaiian Bank donated $100,000 toward the Haiyan relief efforts. A donation of $50,000 was made to the American Red Cross and another $50,000 will go to the Filipino Community Center in Hawaii.
Other businesses, organizations, and agencies that donated to the relief drive include the CNMI Public School System ($10,000), Bank of Guam ($10,000), Joeten & Daidai Foundation ($10,000), Northern Marianas Badminton Association ($2,000), Tinian Marianas Lions Club ($1,800), and MDX Amateur Radio Club ($500). Others also donated money and in-kind items but figures have yet to be provided.
