On Aug. 29, 2014, Pacific Islander Katrina Caragay graduated from the intensive 8.5-week Basic Training Program at the Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio Texas.

Caragay was able to study law and the U.S. Constitution, military protocol and procedures, firearms and self-defense, physical fitness, and hours and hours of marching and learning to move like a unit. There were over 500 cadets in her group, and she made good friends with airmen from Pohnpei, Pennsylvania and Oregon.

Her next stop is Fort Sam Houston where she will study nursing for four months.  In the future, Caragay wants to be a flight nurse.

Of her experience, Caragay said: “In the beginning, it was all yelling and doing drills, but after two weeks, we understood that the drill instructors were turning us into professional airmen and making us ready to do our jobs.” (PR)
