Court awards worker $235,214 more
U.S. District Court for the NMI Chief Judge Ramona V. Manglona has awarded a foreign worker $235,214 in attorneys’ fees and costs for prevailing in her lawsuit against her former employers for failing to pay her wages.
In an order on Friday, Manglona awarded Yu Xuan, a Chinese national, $199,227.50 in attorneys’ fees, $14,089.50 in other fees, and $21,897.19 in costs, for a total of $235,214.19.
Manglona earlier awarded Xuan $132,677 in unpaid wages and in liquidated damages.
The judge found investor Yang Tack Hwang and his two companies—Joo Yeon Corp. and Se Young Corp.—liable to pay Xuan the unpaid wages, liquidated damages, attorneys’ fees, and costs.
Attorneys Mark Hanson, Bruce Berline, and Benjamin K. Petersburg, counsel for Xuan, demanded a total of $199,227.50 in attorneys’ fees.
Hanson, Berline, Petersburg also sought payment of $15,974.50 in paralegal and staff services and $21,897.19 in costs.
Why was there not more info on the reason and circumstances for this lawsuit.
It seems that there is a monumental amount of lawyer fees and nothing is stated specific for what the other fees are for. There is no back wages etc.
I would seriously doubt that any of this would be collected as this person (company) will just disappear after emptying the local bank account while most likely abandoning the workers and equipment.
Just what type of business is these companies involved in?
