Dangerous surf seen until Tuesday
The CNMI Homeland Security and Emergency Management issued yesterday a high surf advisory that will be in effect until 6am Tuesday next week.
Based on the information received from the National Weather Service in Tiyan, Guam, combined seas of 12 to 14 feet and fresh to strong northeast winds will produce hazardous conditions for operators of small craft through Saturday. Meanwhile, scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms are expected by Saturday as a tropical disturbance northwest of Chuuk moves slowly west.
The high surf advisory remains in effect along north and east facing reefs.
Hazardous surf of 10 to 13 feet is expected along east facing reefs and 9 to 11 feet along north facing reefs today, Friday. Surf will continue to be hazardous through the weekend.
A small craft advisory is also in effect for all the Marianas waters until 6am Tuesday next week.
Northeast winds of 23 to 29 mph and combined seas of 11 to 14 feet will produce hazardous conditions for operators of small craft for the next several days.
Inexperienced mariners, especially those operating smaller vessels, should avoid boating in these conditions. If travel by boat is necessary exercise caution, especially near reef lines and when entering or leaving harbors and inlets. Avoid venturing near exposed reefs and beaches, especially those along north and east facing reefs as rip currents is life threatening. (PR)
