The Falcons’ Kyle Kapileo had his hands full during the awards ceremony for the Majors division of the 2016 Saipan Little League Baseball last Sunday at the Miguel “Tan Ge” Basa Pangelinan Ballfield.
The pitcher hauled four trophies, including the coveted regular season most valuable player plum. Kapileo won the close battle for the MVP award, as he was also named as RBI, home run, and ERA champion. He edged IT&E Regulators’ Patrick Celis and the Comets’ Bing Nakamura, who also gained multiple awards in last weekend’s trophy presentation. Kapileo had 25 RBIs in the 12-game elimination, posted an 0.42 ERA as he pitched 28 innings and allowed only two earned runs, and scored three home runs.
Nakamura also got three homers to share the home run top honors with Kapileo and added the runs champ trophy to his collection. Nakamura collected 26 runs in the Comets regular-season sweep. The Comets pitcher was also the Finals MVP after lifting the Comets to a 12-2 title win over the Little Legals last Sunday.
Meanwhile, Celis brought home three awards—the doubles and triples champ trophies, and batting champ plum. He went 24-for-36 in the regular season for a batting average of .666 and then tied Delbert Sablan of the Little Legals for the most doubles (9). Celis was also in a deadlock for the most triples (3) with three other players—the As Matuis Twins’ Eliray Castro, the NSA Braves’ Tristan Norita, and the Falcons’ Jonathan Renguul.
In the most strikeouts contest, the Docomo Ol’Aces’ Ken Kaipat was alone at the top spot with his 79 Ks.
Besides the individual trophies, SLLB officials, Best Sunshine International’s CHR director Geri Dela Cruz, and Reps. J.P. Sablan and Angel Demapan also presented team awards. The Pirates were given the Sportsmanship Award, while the Comets took the pennant trophy. The Little Legals and Falcons received the runner-up and third place trophies.
