Farrell book release and signing at AMP today
Local historian Don Farrell will hold a book release and signing of the Korean and Chinese language editions of Saipan, a Brief History today, June 29, 10am at the American Memorial Park Visitors Center.
Last year, with encouragement from the Marianas Visitors Authority and Pacific History Parks (American Memorial Park, Saipan, War in the Pacific Park, Guam) and members of Chinese and Korean communities of Saipan, Farrell and Micronesian Productions undertook the translation of an updated edition of Saipan, a Brief History in Korean and Chinese.
This work fulfills two basic needs: First, it will provide the local Korean and Chinese community with an accurate and up-to-date history of Saipan in their own language, one they can share with their children. Second, it will support efforts made by the Marianas Visitors Authority to ensure that tour guides have an accurate history of Saipan. Third, and most important to Micronesian Productions, it will give our visitors a glimpse into the history of Saipan that they can take it home and proudly display on their coffee tables and share with family and friends.
Farrell is also very proud that the Korean translation was done by Joo (Judy) Hee Kim, a 2004 graduate of the Northern Marianas Academy, Saipan.
Pacific History Parks has agreed to give a one-day 15-percent discount on these new books, in any of the three languages. Case lots of 20 will be available for public and private institutions.
MVA is providing light refreshments.
Farrell said in 1987 he and his wife, Carmen Muna Dela Cruz, amoved to Tinian and he began work on a new historical series, beginning, of course, with Tinian: A Brief History, (1988), followed by Saipan: A Brief History, (1992), Guam: A Brief History, (1994), and Rota: A Brief History, (2003).
Farrell extends his sincerest gratitude to all the public agencies and private companies that have supported this effort: Pacific History Parks, the Marianas Visitors Bureau, Mayor of Saipan David M. Apatang, Joeten Enterprises, Susupe and Garapan; Bestseller Books, Saipan and Guam; Century Tours, Saipan Travel, Tan Holdings, Let’s Go Saipan,Kanoa Resort and Fiesta Resort; Al Pacific, LLC., I Love Saipan, Garapan, Paseo de Marianas, Managaha, Hyatt Hotel and Kensington Hotel; Steven Ambrose Tours, and Grandvrio Resort.
