The Federal Bureau of Investigation has joined the Department of Public Safety’s investigation into the fatal shooting of security guard James Patrick Deleon Guerrero inside a poker arcade in Afetnas.

As this developed, DPS Commissioner James C. Deleon Guerrero disclosed yesterday that the autopsy showed that Deleon Guerrero died of a gunshot wound to the right side of his chest.

A source at DPS said the FBI is also investigating the shooting incident because the crime involved a firearm.

In response to Saipan Tribune’s inquiry, FBI spokesman Tom Simon yesterday confirmed that the FBI is assisting DPS police in their investigation of the shooting.

“It remains a police investigation,” Simon said.

He said any comments regarding the case should come from the police.

Guam chief medical examiner Dr. Aurelio Espinola did the autopsy on Deleon Guerrero’s remains at the Commonwealth Health Center’s morgue on Monday.

Espinola was reportedly summoned to the crime scene last April 21 where he pronounced the victim dead.

At that time, Espinola was about to leave for Guam after doing an autopsy on the body of Ana Maria Limes, who was killed inside her house in Oleai. The body was found last April 20.

Deleon Guerrero was on duty at Royal Poker in Afetnas when a masked man entered the establishment and shot him with a handgun.

Police discovered Deleon Guerrero’s body in the bathroom. A female cashier was also shot at but she was not hit as she had locked herself and ducked inside the cashier’s booth. The suspect failed to get any money and fled on foot, police said.

Sources said police are pursuing “good leads” on the identity of the masked gunman.
