T.J. Ferrer scored his first win in the 2023 Monster Energy Point Series Race after topping the Mini II Class of the June competition last Sunday at the Cowtown Race Track.
The 13-year-old incoming seventh grader at Tanapag Elementary School actually finished tied with Nanako Celis with 47 points apiece, but edged her after finishing first in the second heat. Celis took the checkered flag in the first heat. Calix Cruz completed the Top 3 with 20 points.
Aboard his 2021 YZ85, Ferrer said it felt amazing after finally winning his first race in the Marianas Racing Association-organized race.
“It was good to finally get back to racing and winning first, but I would like to congratulate all the riders in my division on a great race. It’s great to have everyone back on island racing. I wish I went to Guam to enjoy the wonderful racing.”
MRA didn’t have races last April and May as riders took part in the 40th Smokin’ Wheels in Guam and because of that Ferrer admitted he didn’t have much practice leading up to last Sunday’s race.
As for the weather and course conditions last Sunday, he said it “was a very dry race, the dirt basically turned into sand. But I actually liked it compared to it being muddy and wet.”
Ferrer dedicated his June win to his parents, siblings, friends, and Trench Tech Racing. He celebrated the milestone by eating ice cream.
In the Veterans Class, Dave Celis dominated the field anew by winning both races for 50 points. Justis “Cuki” Alvarez finished second with 44 points, while Julian Salalila came in third with 38 points.
