Island motorists got an early Christmas gift yesterday afternoon when gas stations on Saipan lowered their prices by 20 cents.

The Mobil gas station along Middle Road in Garapan said its regular unleaded gasoline is now $4.41 a gallon, down from $4.61, while its super unleaded gasoline is now $4.72 a gallon, down from $4.92.
Diesel, meanwhile, now costs $4.76 a gallon, which is down from $5.11 just a day before.
The Shell gas station along Airport Road also lowered its prices, with V-Power mirroring the 20-cent decrease for Mobil’s regular unleaded gasoline to $4.41 a gallon.
Menchu Dejesus of Fina Sisu said the decrease in gas prices is definitely an early Christmas gift for her family and the community as well. She said her family of five usually spends $40 a week filling up their sports utility vehicle.
Ambet Omampo echoed Dejesus when the 43-year-old employee of Island Business Systems and Supply said the lower cost of gas prices this holiday season is truly a blessing this Christmas.
On Tinian, the Mobil gas station there said they have yet to lower their gas prices as they’re still selling their old stock. Regular unleaded gasoline on the island costs $5.77 a gallon, while diesel is $6.27 a gallon.
Saipan Tribune didn’t get a report of gas prices on Rota.
The Associated Press reports that the recent slide in gas prices across the nation is a result of OPEC’s decision to leave its production target at 30 million barrels a day. Member nations of the cartel are worried they’ll lose market share if they lower production.
Visited Florida recently, $2.64/gallon. 6 months ago it was $3.29 I can only say that single provider equals getting hosed. They had a $0.75 a gallon decrease and it looks like more to come. That’s what? nearly 23% lower now? How much has it gone down in the CNMI in the same time frame? Gift? HA! Someone is still getting dirty rich(er) and blaming it on local conditions. Shipping costs have gone down and there is a “glut” of finished product just waiting to be sold. $3.54 a gallon gets closer to reality, not $4.41, and still gives a high “locality” profit. Shell or Mobil or whoever makes no difference, it all comes in together does it not?
FACT: I APPRECIATE MY EXTRA $.50 …….THANK YOU!
