GMS holds parent leadership meetings throughout February
February was National Parent Leadership Month, dedicated to honoring the tireless efforts of parents and those who parental roles for the CNMI’s youth. In observation of the month, the Green Meadow School administrative and teaching staff held short leadership seminars every Friday of the month that served as small reminders to all the parents in attendance.
Each seminar had a unique topic. The first meeting on Feb. 5 touched on the topic of responsibility. GMS president Glenn Songcuan, assisted by fourth-grade class adviser Rosalie Habijan, shared a number of roles and duties that parents are (and are not!) responsible for.
On Feb. 12, GMS teachers Lorelisa Espiritu and Bona Angeles highlighted the importance of emergency preparedness and shared the emergency plans and policies in place at Green Meadow School.
On Feb. 19, the Division of Youth Services made a guest presentation, speaking about the topic of “Child Abuse and Neglect.” While being a sensitive subject, parents and school staff need to be aware in order to identify potential cases of abuse and neglect and act accordingly. This special presentation was conducted by DYS representatives Juanicia Villanueva and Melycher Sablan.
In addition, GMS principal Milagros Songcuan shared her own personal experiences and former GMS parent leaders were invited to speak and share their experiences and how they overcame hardships. Will and Gemma Pamintuan were invited to speak on the importance of discipline when raising a child.
The final meeting last Feb. 26 had GMS awarding certificates to parents to acknowledge their efforts. Former Department of Cultural and Community Affairs Secretary Robert Hunter was guest speaker. (PR)
