Groundhog Day in the Year of the Earth Pig

G – Green apples, my mouth waters, year of the pig
R – Rainy day, something in motion, backyard commotion
O – Our garden groundhog, eating tender shoots, my father shoots
U – Underground, new sprouts all gone, wet trail
N – Near the nest, cracked rotten eggs, possum
D – Dry cornbread and molasses, small loin and ribs, groundhog passes
H – Holes worn slick, creek thawing out, groundhog day,
O – Outside grill, pork fat greases pan, groundhog man
G – Gee forget duck, here comes the woodchuck, our good luck.
