The Gregorio T. Camacho Elementary School team reigned against 13 other elementary schools at the 22nd Annual Academic Challenge Bowl last Saturday.

The event, hosted by the Marianas High School’s National Honor Society, drew a crowd of over 150 students, parents, and educators.

Each team consisted of five members, with three assigned to compete and two as alternates. Substitutions were allowed but only after each round.

The competition consisted of three rounds—easy, medium, and hard—and each school competed for the most points. Agape Christian School and GTC were tied and barged into a tiebreaker round to compete for first prize.

The tiebreaker question asked them to identify the figurative language in the sentence: “I am nobody.” The correct answer is paradox.

Garapan Elementary School placed third in the competition. Their team consisted of Raja Sevugan, Christine Retirado, Javan Mendez, Ryan Quitano, and Emma Chong.

Agape Christian School ranked second after the tiebreaker round. Their team consisted of Alice Zhang, Elvira Zhang, Kyla Carino, Mary Fu, and Bo Chen.

GTC’s competitors were Rabeya Akter, Gabriel Retardo, Hannah Tenorio, Tyana Tesiro, and Nieves Villagomez.

Deborah Moore, a third grade teacher, was the coach for the GTC team. She feels ecstatic that her students were able to place this year. “We were hoping to place [in the top three], but we didn’t expect to win!” Moore congratulated the students for their hard work as well as their parents.

William S. Reyes Elementary School, Green Meadows School, Grace Christian Academy, San Vicente Elementary School, Saipan International School, Kagman Elementary School, Oleai Elementary School, Sinapalo Elementary School, Koblerville Elementary School, and Northern Marianas International School were the other competing teams.
