High risk for rip currents

Share

Hazardous trade-wind generated seas and swells will continue to produce large surf on north and east facing reefs.

Based on the information received from the National Weather Service in Tiyan, Guam, and compiled at the CNMI Emergency Operations Center State Warning Point, there is a high risk of rip currents through Wednesday afternoon.

If you become caught in a rip current, yell for help. Remain calm. Do not exhaust yourself and stay afloat while waiting for help. If you have to swim out of a rip current, swim parallel to shore and back toward the beach when possible. Do not attempt to swim directly against a rip current as you will tire quickly.

The public is being advised to avoid venturing near reefs and beaches, especially those facing north and east. Large breaking waves can knock you down and cause serious injuries. Strong rip currents will be life threatening. (PR)
