The first of the three session classes took place last Friday attended by 25 students.

The consul for Japan Hitoshi Kikuchi himself headed the first session.

Participants learned various Japanese arts and crafts as well as how to write their names in Japanese character.

They also watched a short DVD presentation on Japanese culture.

“I am very pleased to have been able to hold the first Japanese cultural class by the Consular Office of Japan today at the library for the purpose of fostering mutual understanding and friendship between Japan and Saipan through the introduction of a fraction of Japanese culture.” Kikuchi said.

According to Kikuchi, he always wanted to hold a cultural class in the library.

“Ever since I was assigned here on Saipan in December, 2013, I have been thinking of holding a Japanese cultural class at the Joeten Kiyu Public Library for local people,” he said.

“I would like to thank Consul Kikuchi and his staff Miss Yasuko Kobayashi and Mrs. Muna for a wonderful presentation and for sharing their culture with our students,” acting library director Erlinda Naputi said.

The Japanese culture series is open for children ages 9 to 12 but older students are also welcome. Seats are limited to 25 students. The next sessions will be held on July 10 and July 17 from 1pm to 2:30pm.

Those who are interested to attend the next sessions may visit the Joeten Kiyu Public Library or call 235-7322/7323/ 7329 or 7316 for more information.
