Joel Buco tops Pedal for Health

Joel Buco returned to form after winning the 33-kilometer road bike division of the Saipan Unity Lions Club’s 6th Annual Bike Race last Sunday.

The 49-year-old native of Nueva Ecija, Philippines completed the course from Banzai Cliff to the Mobil Oil gas station in Tanapag, to the Million-Gallon Water Tank to Suicide Cliff and Bird Island, before returning to Banzai Cliff in a time of 1:08:04.

Following in his coattails were Renren Gaviola and Mark Isip with times of 1:08:25 and 1:09:30, respectively.

In the women’s long course, Robyn Spaeth was the first to cross the finish line in 1:15:50. Ayano Braxton came second in 1:16:26, while Heather Brook was third in 1:16:58.

In the mountain bike long course, Nap Dizon ruled the roost with a time of 1:20:25, followed by Rolando Gacayan and Mike Aparte after completing the race in 1:20:49 and 1:22:15, respectively.

Samson Salgado topped the easy course for road bikers with a time of 39:41. He was followed by Jaycee Pangilinan and Rodmar Diaz with rides of 41:42 and 41:53,  respectively.

In the mountain bike easy course, Willy Dela Rosa, Ariel Opanda, and Razel Llano finished 1-2-3 with times of 41:20, 41:43, and 45:20, respectively.

Marie Sablan was first in the women’s mountain bike easy course with her time of 52:52.Juanita Fajardo and Elsa Reyes came in second and  third with rides of 56:46 and 1:07:12, respectively.

Champions for each category received a plaque and $100. Second place got a medal and $75, while third place took home a medal and $50.

Race coordinator Wilfredo Barbo said proceeds from SULC’s 6th Annual Bike Race will go to the Lions Club’s global causes like diabetes, feeding the hungry, and treating those who are visually impaired and with childhood cancer.
