Jury trial in immigration fraud case begins

A federal jury trial began yesterday in the case of a woman who is facing immigration fraud charges.

Chief Judge Ramona Manglona was still selecting the members of the jury when Saipan Tribune left the U.S. District Court at 4:30pm.

Liwen Tang is charged with two counts of immigration document fraud. She appeared with court-appointed counsel Colin Thompson. Former police officer Christopher Leon Guerrero is assisting Thompson as a private investigator.

Assistant U.S. attorney Garth R. Backe is prosecuting the case.

According to the indictment, Tang lied in her application to register permanent residence or adjust status with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services.

She allegedly claimed that her only child was her daughter born in 2006 when in fact she also gave birth to a son in April 2002 whose biological father was listed on the child’s birth certificate as Abdullah al Mamun.
