Kobee Mendoza nearly swept the individual awards in the 2014 BANMI Youth League, winning five of the six trophies handed out in the closing ceremony of the competition last Saturday at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.

Mendoza, who played for the San Jose Ol’Aces in the U18 age group, took the scoring champion and regular season and Finals MVP plums in the division. In the U21 division, the Marianas High School standout, who suited up for the Ol’Aces, bagged the scoring champion and regular season MVP awards.

Jack Aranda of the U21 champions 670 Sonics prevented a Mendoza sweep after clinching the Finals MVP honors.

Mendoza led the SJ Ol’Aces to a perfect record (8-0) in the round-robin regular season and averaged close to 13 points per game. He recorded his best output against the Chalan Kanoa Saints late last month after firing 18 markers.

In the playoffs, Mendoza averaged 11.3 points, posting 10 and 5 markers in the SJ Ol’Aces 70-32 rout of the Rollers B in the quarterfinals and 47-41 semis victory against the Rollers A, respectively. In the finals, which the Ol’Aces won against Kentucky Fried Chicken, 95-84, Mendoza led the champion team with his 19 markers.

A few hours after clinching the U18 division crown for the SJ Ol’Aces, Mendoza then played for the Ol’Aces in their U21 title showdown against the Sonics. The MHS guard managed to score 10 points before leaving the match early in the fourth after a bad fall.

Before eventually losing to the Sonics in the finals, 60-66, Mendoza helped the Ol’Aces swept the regular season (7-0). He averaged close to 12 points in the elimination round. He then scored 10 markers in their 93-32 demolition of Laly 4 in the first round of the playoffs and 16 in their semis victory over Dream team.
