Saipan Mayor David M. Apatang is encouraging the entire community to be always reminded of the importance of the 4th of July celebration every year.

“It is important to remind ourselves why we take time from our daily lives to celebrate the 4th of July. To many the [annual celebration] is a symbol of our liberation to the place we live today,” said Apatang in his welcome remarks in last Friday’s 2016 Liberation Day Carnival opening at the Garapan Fishing Base.

“We didn’t hear the bombs explode, the gunshots, or the prayers to end. We never thought that any moment our lives could end. Today, we hear loud, jolly, and mood-setting music,” Apatang said.

“We are lucky and that is why we celebrate it today, to give thanks to the men and women who sacrificed their lives to free others. To the Lord, who also helped in giving us the freedom,” he added.

Apatang said people should show compassion and respect as the community remembers the horrors of war.

“As we celebrate the 71st year of liberation and freedom, we must always remember that we are still healing from the scars that cut so deep in someone’s life, we must respect each other and be compassionate to one another.”

“Again thank you, God bless, and let’s have a cheerful, safe festivities, and celebration,” he added.

The Liberation Day celebration is a whole month of festivities and Skywalker Communications Group is happy to invite the community to partake of this wonderful event. Come by Garapan Fishing Base, 5pm-10pm everyday. (Mackenzie Perez)
