Man arrested for alleged possession of ‘ice’
Police arrested a 35-year-old man who was allegedly found in possession of methamphetamine or “ice” in his car in Chalan Kanoa on Tuesday.
At yesterday’s hearing, Superior Court Associate Judge Joseph N. Camacho imposed a $25,000 cash bail on Ignacio Deleon Guerrero Demapan Jr., who is charged with possession of a controlled substance.
Assistant public defender Michael Sato was appointed as counsel for Demapan. Assistant attorneys general Emily Cohen and Heather Barcinas appeared for the government.
Preliminary hearing will be on May 26 at 1:30pm.
Police detective Rudolfo Saures Hermosilla Jr. stated in his report that police officer David Hosono was doing a routine check on poker arcades when he saw a white tinted Toyota Prius with license plate ACV 853 parked on the road near Viva Poker along Petro Yobbo Avenue in Chalan Kanoa late Monday afternoon. Honoso saw the car suddenly drive away and turn right into a residence without signaling.
Hosono asked a young male, who was standing in front of the house, if he knows the owner of the white car that had just parked at his residence. The boy replied he does not know the car and allowed the officer to check the car.
Hosono approached the driver’s side window and knocked on it. The driver, later identified as Demapan, rolled down the window. While talking with Demapan, Hosono allegedly saw a small ziplock bag containing a white crystalline substance inside the open compartment above the passenger seat.
Demapan told the officer that he was not carrying his driver’s license or identification card and that he was at that residence to check on his friend.
When the officer asked him who owns the ziplock bag containing the crystalline substance, Demapan replied that maybe it’s Joshua Diaz’s because the latter was with him and had turned himself in to the police.
Diaz surrendered to police on Tuesday morning to face charges of trafficking of a controlled substance and possession of a controlled substance.
Hosono also allegedly saw another ziplock bag containing white crystalline substance hidden behind a pack of cigarettes placed in the open compartment area and another ziplock bag with crystalline substance placed in a soda can in the center console.
Hosono allegedly tested the substance and found it presumptive positive for “ice.”
The officer later released the car to Demapan’s parents.
The mother, who works at the Office of the Attorney General, told the officer that they have been talking to their son about his use of illegal drugs but he would not listen to their advice.
At 8:17pm on Tuesday, Demapan was taken to the Department of Corrections, where he was booked and detained.
Again a person who does not live in the Mariana Islands making statements on our behalf. For him to state that the Navy is “seeking to insert itself into the island chain without the consent of villagers and residents” is far removed from reality. The vast majority of folks here, where I live, want and appreciate the military’s presence. Many work directly for the DoD. Many more work to support them. And all of us benefit by their being here. To let the loud protests of a small minority of citizens represent the whole is misleading and disingenuous. Poll after poll on Guam proves that the majority here support the military and the buildup. Once one is done in the NMI the results there will be the same.
Amen brother!
