Attorney General Edward E. Manibusan judged pretty well the green and fairways of the Laolao Bay Golf Resort west course en route to topping the first round of the Saipan Golfers Association Ace of Aces Tournament last Sunday.

The former Superior Court presiding judge wound up with a net score of 73 after shooting an eight-over-par 80. The 7-handicap Manibusan started out with a 41 in the first nine holes before improving with a 39 in the back nine.

Four strokes behind Manibusan is Steve Balakrishna after the Pacific Islands Club Saipan F&B director came away with a net score of 77 in the opening round. The 98-handicap Krishnan had a gross score of 86 built around a 41 in the first nine holes and 45 in the last nine holes.

First Hawaiian Bank manager Juan Lizama is currently third in the standings after also finishing with a net score of 77. He finished with a gross score of 93, which minus his 16 handicap, gave him the net 77. Krishnan edged him in a scorecard tiebreak for No. 2 in the first round leaderboard.

In the longest drive competition, Rick Kautz outdistanced everyone in hole No. 2, while Nick Sablan did the same in hole No. 12.

Manibusan came closest to the pin in holes No. 3 and 17, while Krishnan won the contest in hole No. 7. Frances Sablan did the trick in hole No. 13.

The first round of SGA’s season-ending tournament actually was supposed to be held last Saturday, but inclement weather pushed the first round to the next day.

Day 2 will now be played this Sunday, Feb. 9, at the Kingfisher Golf Links in Talafofo. Tee time is 9am with show time set an hour earlier at 8am. Banquet will follow after the end of the second round at Kingfisher Golf Links.

Aside from Manibusan (May), Krishnan (December), Kautz (June), Nick Sablan (November), Lizama (July) and Frances Sablan, other monthly winners competing in the tournament are Larry Deleon Guerrero (January), Steve Balakrishna (February), Joe Sablan (March), John “Nanni” Cruz (April), Alex Tudela (August), Juan L. Babauta (September), and Manny Alvarez (October).
