Meleisea’s presentation will cover the Mau a Pule, the indigenous Samoan resistance movement organized against German colonial rule in the early 20th century.

This movement, led by the orator Lauaki, resulted in the exile of ten chiefs and their families to Saipan in 1909.

Meleisea is the director for the Center for Samoan Studies at the National University of Samoa. He has published books and articles on Samoa and Pacific history.

This presentation is a part of the “Samoan Exiles on Saipan” project sponsored by the Northern Marianas Humanities Council. It is open to the public and free of charge. (PR)
